Sleigh the Season: Tips for Year-End Fundraising (for late starters)

Updated: 19 hours ago

The holiday season is upon us!

The turkey is in the freezer, and we’re all preparing for a boost in fundraising.

But beware, festive friends.

While holiday décor fills the stores, donations won’t magically fall from trees like pine needles on December 26th.

If you haven’t started your year-end fundraising yet, hop on that sled, light a candle, and start NOW!

With time running short, here’s a quick starter list.

  • Prepare a story (or stories) that brings your mission to life and create emails, social media posts, and any other communications you can.

    • Use these stories to showcase your impact over the past year.

    • Share how your donors are the heroes who make it all happen: “Thanks to your support, we were able to…”

    • Include a clear call to action with easy-to-find links to your giving page—MAKE IT EASY TO GIVE!

  • Review your CRM data

    • Personally reach out to your major donors—don’t include them in a general email blast!

    • Pull a list of lapsed donors (LYBUNT, SYBUNT) and write a special note inviting them back, sharing a story that reminds them of the impact they helped make in the past.

Don’t stop on December 25th!

Nearly 10% of all charitable giving occurs in the final three days of the year.

  • Say THANK YOU to everyone who has supported your mission

    • You never know if one of your volunteers has the capacity to give.

    • Vendors might also want to support you with a donation.

    • Grantors who have funded you will appreciate a holiday greeting.

This isn’t everything you can do if you start planning earlier—like diving into your data (who gave when to what and when), reviewing past successes, setting SMART goals, organizing matching gifts, and more.

But, It’s not too late to SLEIGH the SEASON.
